I cannot call myself a cermicist, but clay does provide the ideal material for portrait sculpture. I prefer to use one of the sculpting waxes for pieces that I am going to make a mould from, but clay just seems right for the scale and touch needed to create human busts. It does have the added advantage that a bust made carefully and hollow can be fired to produce a piece in itself. This was the case for the bust of Julian Fellowes and Gregor Mendel.
